Braidburn Valley Park Saturday 1st October (NEW DATE)
Welcome to Interlopers local orienteering event at Braidburn Valley Park and The Steils on Saturday 1st October. Please note the rearranged date, and that start times will now be back to the usual 1:30 - 3pm slot.
Our event is based in Braidburn Valley Park, Edinburgh. Braidburn Valley Park is a grass-bowl, with the Braid Burn traversing it, well tended by the Friends of Braidburn Valley Park. The two longer, urban courses visit The Steils and its environs, well suited for sprint orienteering practice.
Enter on Fabian4; entries close midnight Monday 26th September.

DIRECTIONS
Assembly and start/finish will be just inside the SE entrance to the park.
Public transport: Lothian Buses #11 and #15 pass the east side of Braidburn Park where Assembly is located. Lothian Buses #5 and #16 also come fairly close to Assembly.
ENTRY AND ENTRY FEES
Entries are open on Fabian4, closing at midnight on Monday 26th September. A small number of extra maps will be printed and available on a first come first served basis on the day.

Seniors: £5 (SOA/BOF-affiliated club members) / £7 (non-members)
Juniors: £2.50 (SOA/BOF-affiliated club members) / £3.50 (non-members)
TOILETS
There are no toilets at the venue.
COURSES
Maps will be at 1:5000 scale, planned by Ben Stevens. Event organiser is Paul Caban.

Yellow | 1.6km straight line distance / 1.7km shortest actual route | Controls (checkpoints) are very easy to find, mostly on main paths, ideal for younger children and complete beginners. The course stays entirely within Braidburn Valley Park. |
Orange | 2.2km (straight) / 2.8 (shortest) | Moderate, controls are on or near paths, with more route choice. Good for progressing juniors and beginner adults who are reasonably confident reading a map. This course goes beyond the Park, but does not cross any roads. |
Short Urban | 4.0 / 6.3km | *Suitable for adult intermediate and experienced orienteers. This course crosses many roads, and visits The Steils and its environs. |
Urban | 5.0 / 8.3km | *Suitable for adult intermediate and experienced orienteers. This course crosses many roads, and visits The Steils and its environs. |
* Note: As the Urban courses have road crossings it's a condition of our sport's insurance that any under-16s must be shadowed by an adult.
REGISTRATION, START AND FINISH
Start times 1:30 - 3pm.
Courses close at 4pm at which time controls will begin to be collected in, particularly in the area of the Park being used by the afternoon event.
Everyone must report to the finish and proceed to Download, whether they finish their courses or not.
If you think you may take a while on your chosen course, please ask for an early start time. Late starters on the urban courses should take care in the Park.
ELECTRONIC TIMING
SportIdent (SI) electronic timing will be used, with SI Air enabled. If you have your own SI dibber, please bring it. Otherwise SI dibbers can be hired free of charge, but with £30 charge if lost. This must have been requested when booking your place for the event.
SAFETY NOTICE
Participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. By entering the event you are accepting this condition.
Parents/guardians should explain all safety aspects to all children and vulnerable persons in their care and if you are in any doubt about their ability to stay safe only allow them to participate with a carer.
A risk assessment has been carried out by the organiser.
Please note:
- Vehicles use the roads, driveways and car parks, so you must watch out for vehicles, give way and follow the Highway Code before, during and after the event ie: to and from your car as well as during the event. The Yellow course does not cross any roads.
- The area is used by the general public, including dog walkers and cyclists. Please respect their right to use the area and make room to pass safely. You are required to abide by the Scottish Outdoor Access Code (see http://www.outdooraccess-scotland.com/sites/default/files//docs/know_the_code_leaflet.pdf), and if necessary give way or stop running temporarily for safety reasons, e.g. some cyclists, dogs, etc.
- If you or one of your dependants have an underlying medical condition that might occur during the event, please brief the organiser in advance and leave a sealed written record at the event registration (to be destroyed afterwards).
- The area in a few places can be rough underfoot, steep and slippery.
- The Braid Burn flows through the Park, and should only be crossed at bridges.
- You are encouraged to carry a coat if there is a risk of bad weather and a whistle in case of injury (if injured give 6 long blasts, wait a minute, repeat).
- As ever, if you have any COVID symptoms, please respect others and stay away.
