DIRECTIONS
Please enter Craigmillar Castle Park from the Castlebrae Avenue entrance only. The route to registration and start from other entrances passes through the competition area.
By train: Nearest station is Edinburgh Waverley. Lothian Buses service 14 runs over North Bridge (stops on Leith Street and South Bridge either side of Waverley) and will take you close to the venue.
By bus: Lothian Bus services 2, 12, 14 and 30 pass close to the park entrance (Peffermill Road)
By car: You can park on local streets, but please be considerate to local residents. Alternatively park at Cameron Toll shopping centre from where it's a 2km walk along Peffermill Road and Craigmillar Castle Gardens to the park entrance.

Entries close at midnight on Monday 24th February. A small number of extra maps will be printed and available on a first come first served basis on the day.

Pairs, Groups and Families should make one entry paying the rate of the oldest participant, put the second runner / group / family name in the comment box, and order any extra maps (£1 each) on the entry form.
Entry on the day (EOD) will be at non-member rates, and subject to map availability so please pre-book to guarantee a map.
TOILETS
Nearest public toilets are at Cameron Toll shopping centre.
TERRAIN
Mix of fast open parkland, runnable forest and dense woodland. Areas of brashing (some spikey) and Rhododendron. A network of public foot paths. Area used extensively by mountain bikers so watch out for tracks through the trees that are not formal paths on the map. The area has a number of crags and these and the ground can be slippery when wet.
The area has been completely remapped for 2025, surveyed by Alasdair Pedley.
COURSES
Map will be to 1:6000 scale, with courses planned by Mike Stewart. Distances are straight line distance - you should expect to run 20-30% longer typically on the optimal route.
Please note that Red, Green and Blue courses have 2 timed-out road crossings (marshalled, at a pedestrian crossing), and a double sided map. All other courses have single-sided maps with no road crossings.

Yellow | 2.5km / 60m | Uses linear features like paths, walls, and streams. Mainly used by under 12s and family groups. |
Orange | 3.3km / 80m | Involves basic use of the compass and route choice. Ideal for competent youngsters or novice adults. |
Red (aka Long Orange) | 4.9km / 80m | Involves basic use of the compass and route choice. Ideal for competent youngsters or novice adults who would like a longer run with simpler navigation |
Light Green | 3.9km / 100m | Uses simple contour and point features. Ideal for improvers as the navigational difficulty begins to increase. |
Short Green | 2.6km / 50m | Hard navigational difficulty. Mostly used by experienced under 18s and adults wanting a short but challenging course.Shorter / less physical than green and blue courses. |
Green | 4.2km / 80m | Hard navigational difficulty. Mostly used by experienced under 18s and adults wanting a short but challenging course. |

REGISTRATION, START AND FINISH
Starts will be between 1 - 2:30pm. There will be no allocated start times; just turn up and wait your turn.
Courses close at 3:30pm at which time controls will begin to be collected in.
Everyone must report to the finish and proceed to Download, whether they finish their courses or not. Otherwise you may trigger a search party and/or call to the emergency services!
If you think you may take a while on your chosen course, please ask start early.

ELECTRONIC TIMING
SportIdent (SI) electronic timing will be used, with SI Air enabled. If you have your own SI dibber, please bring it. Otherwise SI dibbers can be hired free of charge, but with £30 charge if lost. This must have been requested when booking your place for the event.
SAFETY NOTICE
Participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. By entering the event you are accepting this condition.
Parents/guardians should explain all safety aspects to all children and vulnerable persons in their care and if you are in any doubt about their ability to stay safe only allow them to participate with a carer.
A risk assessment has been carried out by the organiser.
Please note:
- The area is used by the general public, including dog walkers and cyclists. Please respect their right to use the area and make room to pass safely. You are required to abide by the Scottish Outdoor Access Code (see http://www.outdooraccess-scotland.com/sites/default/files//docs/know_the_code_leaflet.pdf), and if necessary give way or stop running temporarily for safety reasons, e.g. some cyclists, dogs, etc.
- If you or one of your dependants have an underlying medical condition that might occur during the event, please brief the organiser in advance and leave a sealed written record at the event registration (to be destroyed afterwards).
- The area in a few places can be rough underfoot, steep and slippery.
- You are encouraged to carry a coat if there is a risk of bad weather and a whistle in case of injury (if injured give 6 long blasts, wait a minute, repeat).
- As ever, if you are unwell with COVID or anything else that you would not wish to catch from someone else, please respect others and stay away.
First Aid will be available on the day from certified first aiders. Anything more serious should be dealt with at the nearest A&E which is at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, 51 Little France Cres, Old Dalkeith Rd, Edinburgh EH16 4SA. Main reception 0131 536 1000.

When entering our orienteering events your name may appear in the results section of the Interlopers orienteering club website. We do not share your data with other organisations, other than the sport governing bodies for administrative purposes. We do not use it for any marketing purposes.
