TERRAIN

Within the park: parkland: mainly short cropped grass and paths.
Outwith the park: rough open area (longer grass), urban terrain with street crossings

COURSES

Map will be 1:4000 scale except light green (1:5000), with courses planned by Ann Haley

Planned to Sports Governing Body standards. Maps will be printed on waterproof paper
Yellow 1.7 km / 45m climb / 13 controls Controls (checkpoints) are very easy to find, mostly on main paths, ideal for younger children and complete beginners.
Orange 2.1 km / 60m / 13 controls Moderate, controls are on or near paths, with more route choice. Good for progressing juniors and beginner adults who are reasonably confident reading a map.
Red (long orange) 3.4 km / 95m / 20 controls As orange, but longer. Course goes outside the park but has no major road crossings and is suitable for Under-16s to run unaccompanied.
Light Green 4.7 km / 150m / 23 controls Suitable for experienced orienteers. Course goes outside the park and crosses roads so Under-16s must be accompanied / shadowed.

 Competitors should be aware that:

  • Bridges must be used to cross the stream
  • A black circle on the map and on the control descriptions represents a seat. Not all seats are on the map.
  • Red course - you may encounter a car park. Please take care here.
  • Light green is 1:5000 and has a map turnover.

REGISTRATION, START AND FINISH

Starts will be between 1pm and 2:30pm. Start / Finish / Download will be near the SE entrance to the park, off Comiston Springs Avenue.

No allocated start times; 2-minute intervals between starts on each course unless we have too many last-minute starters!

Courses close at 3:45pm at which time controls will begin to be collected in. If you think you will take a long time on your course, please plan to start early.

Everyone must report to the finish and proceed to Download, whether they finish their courses or not. Otherwise you may trigger a search party and/or call to the emergency services!

If you think you may take a while on your chosen course, please ask for an early start time.  Late starters on the urban courses should take care in the Park.
