British Long Distance and Relay Championships Report

News from the British Championships last weekend including a silver medal in the relays ...

Thanks to Lorna Eades for this report.

A small group of around 15  Interlopers made the journey down to Newbury and Henley for the 2023 British Long distance and British Relay championships last weekend. Thankfully most of us had relatively straightforward  journeys down compared to other travellers (Poor weather for driving and Friday evening flight cancellations from Edinburgh causing others major problems).

 Long Distance Championships

The Long Distance Championships were held on Cold Ash, an area of mixed forest with myriad paths and rides, although it was often faster to run in the forest as many of the paths grew progressively muddier as the day wore on.  Poor compass work was often punished as it was very easy to drift off onto similar looking features.  Sadly there were no individual medals for the club this year but still some commendable results

Relay Championships

The next day we headed further east to Hambleden near Henley on Thames.  The terrain was very runnable, mostly white mixed forest, but quite hilly. Added novelty wildlife that was spotted included wild boar, deer and the area's resident wallaby.

Interlopers had two teams entered, Mixed Ad Hoc (Lucy, Laurence and Colin) and a Women's short (Louise Lorna and Claire).  The Ad Hoc team all had superb runs to deliver a silver medal.  The women's short team finished a commendable 4th in a very close fought last leg.
