Craigmillar Castle Park Saturday 4th March


Welcome to Interlopers local orienteering event at Craigmillar Castle Park on Saturday 4th March... entries are now closed, but there will be a limited number of maps available on the day.

Our event is based in Craigmillar Castle Park, Edinburgh. Entries are now closed, but there will be a limited number of maps available for entry on the day - email Events to reserve a map or turn up on the day.

LOCATION and DIRECTIONS

Parking is available on street on Craigmillar Castle Gardens, Castlebrae Avenue, and in nearby streets, e.g. Peffermill Industirial Estate. Parking is also available at Cameron Toll shopping centre which is a 20 minute walk to registration.

Access is available to the park from the corner of the Dalkeith Road recycling centre access road, or from the corner of Craigmillar Castle Gardens and Castlebrae Avenue. There are other access points to the park but these are closest to the assembly and avoid entering (too much of) the competition area.

ENTRY AND ENTRY FEES

Entries are open on Fabian4, closing at midnight on Monday 27th February. A small number of extra maps will be printed and available on a first come first served basis on the day.

Seniors: £5 (SOA/BOF-affiliated club members) / £7 (non-members)

Juniors: £2.50 (SOA/BOF-affiliated club members) / £3.50 (non-members)

Pairs and family groups are welcome - please add second entrant / family details in the special requests box and add extra maps as required in the list of extras.

TOILETS

There are no toilets at the venue. Toilets are available at Cameron Toll Shopping Centre which is a 20 minute walk from registration.

COURSES

Maps will be at 1:7500 scale, planned by Louise Adams and Roanne Lilley, who are also organising the event. Paul Caban will be on-the-day organiser.

Planned to Sports Governing Body standards. Maps will be printed on waterproof paper
Yellow 2.0 km Controls (checkpoints) are very easy to find, mostly on main paths, ideal for younger children and complete beginners.
Orange 3.0 km Moderate, controls are on or near paths, with more route choice. Good for progressing juniors and beginner adults who are reasonably confident reading a map.
Green 5.0 km Suitable for adult intermediate and experienced orienteers.

 

REGISTRATION, START AND FINISH

Registration, assembly and finish will be in the open grassy area next to the playpark, and the start is approx 150m away.

Start times 1:30 - 3pm. Registration will open at 1pm.

Courses close at 4pm at which time controls will begin to be collected in, particularly in the area of the Park being used by the afternoon event.

Everyone must report to the finish and proceed to Download, whether they finish their courses or not.

If you think you may take a while on your chosen course, please ask for an early start time.  Late starters on the urban courses should take care in the Park.

ELECTRONIC TIMING

SportIdent (SI) electronic timing will be used, with SI Air enabled.  If you have your own SI dibber, please bring it.  Otherwise SI dibbers can be hired free of charge, but with £30 charge if lost.  This must have been requested when booking your place for the event.

SAFETY NOTICE

Participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. By entering the event you are accepting this condition. 

Parents/guardians should explain all safety aspects to all children and vulnerable persons in their care and if you are in any doubt about their ability to stay safe only allow them to participate with a carer.

A risk assessment has been carried out by the organiser. 

Please note:

  • Vehicles use the roads, driveways and car parks, so you must watch out for vehicles, give way and follow the Highway Code before, during and after the event ie: to and from your car as well as during the event.  The Yellow course does not cross any roads.
  • The area is used by the general public, including dog walkers and cyclists.  Please respect their right to use the area and make room to pass safely.  You are required to abide by the Scottish Outdoor Access Code (see http://www.outdooraccess-scotland.com/sites/default/files//docs/know_the_code_leaflet.pdf), and if necessary give way or stop running temporarily for safety reasons, e.g. some cyclists, dogs, etc.
  • If you or one of your dependants have an underlying medical condition that might occur during the event, please brief the organiser in advance and leave a sealed written record at the event registration (to be destroyed afterwards).
  • The area in a few places can be rough underfoot, steep and slippery.
  • You are encouraged to carry a coat if there is a risk of bad weather and a whistle in case of injury (if injured give 6 long blasts, wait a minute, repeat).
  • As ever, if you have any COVID symptoms, please respect others and stay away.
