Craigmillar Castle Park Results - 1st March 2025

Thanks to everyone who came along to our Craigmillar Castle Park local event yesterday. We had a great turn-out (over 140) – no doubt attracted by the chance to run on our brand new map (prepared by Alasdair Pedley). Mike Stewart’s comprehensive range of courses really did offer something for everyone, whether complete beginners or very experienced.  See below for the Planner’s report.

We were particularly pleased to welcome a number of families interested in trying orienteering as something new – Craigmillar Castle Park is a good place to start, not just for the terrain but the great adventure playground for a warm-down!  The weather was kind and overall it was a very enjoyable event.  ESOA juniors had an extended opportunity to enjoy the area given a pre-event training session put on by Lorna.

Results are available here:

Many thanks to everyone involved in making it a success:

  • Planner – Mike Stewart
  • Organiser – Colin Ledlie
  • Controller – Dave Kershaw
  • Coordinator, entries and IT - William Ivory
  • Publicity – Katherine Ivory
  • On-the-day: Paul Caban, Lorna Eades, Colin Eades, Jane Carcas, Max Carcas, Oleg Chepelin, Ewart Scott, Brian Miller, Victoria van Rintelen, William Ivory, Katherine Ivory

As well as the event kites, participants might have spotted shiny new permanent orienteering markers posts dotted around the park. Work to reinvigorate the permanent course will be finished soon so stay tuned for news on how you can ‘Orienteer Anytime' here, whether you’re looking for an easy introduction or a bit of training. The new course maps will be made available to download for free via our Permanent Areas webpage or via the British Orienteering portal.

Planner’s Report – Mike Stewart:

I hope you all enjoyed the new map of Craigmillar Castle park. I volunteered to take the opportunity to produce the first courses on what I considered to be a top quality map.
To attract the widest field possible we produced eight courses up to Blue to accommodate as many TD competitors and age classes as we could using 50 controls.

Those of you who chose to run multiple courses will have noticed that the TD5 courses are all simply shortened version loops of the Blue. Easy to do given modern printing. Double sided printing improves clarity of the read and the eagle eyed among you will notice I produce all my maps using 7.5mm circles so competitors have the chance to read the course on offer to them. It's simple to do!  Map scale was 1:6000 to accommodate A4 landscape printing.
