Team Interlopers at the CompassSport Trophy Final 2024
Did Interlopers manage to go one better than last year, when they lost by a single point to Swansea Bay Orienteers (SBOC)? Read on to find out ...
A hardy team of Interlopers represented the club in the Compass Sport Cup Final at Holcombe Ranges on Sunday 20 October, hosted by Pendle Forest Orienteers. A beautiful bright day on Saturday provided good opportunity to enjoy the delights of Northern England, with various club members competing in the FRA Relays and others stretching legs in the sun on fells elsewhere. Alas Sunday morning was somewhat different! After dinner and overnighting at Blackburn Premier Inn we headed off to Holcombe and so did the rain. Early runners got somewhat drenched on the walk up – not the ideal way to start perhaps, particularly as the cloud came well and truly down, needing some extra good compass skills. Nonetheless, it was surprisingly enjoyable running – at least on the moorland with some careful attention required to locate the controls placed in the peat areas, skipping around the bunds. The woodland valley had quite a quantity of mud, which some runners made quite the most of, shall we say. Pity those washing machines that evening. As runners came in the skies cleared and in fact our two-tent empire (still small by FVO standards) was not really required at all!
There were some excellent runs by Interlopers including several 100 pointers (see table below), giving other contenders for the Trophy something to think about. At the end of the day though we didn’t quite make it to top place but came a very worthy second to Trophy winners SROC - Red Rose Orienteers - particularly given the bijou size of the team and some age-category gaps. Very well done to Pippa for keeping the Golden Boot in the club bringing it back to Edinburgh after Louise’s success last year on fastest Women’s run-in.
Many thanks Rob Lee, for Captaining and organising the weekend, and to everybody who took turned out for the club.
