Juniors Update: JIRCs, JHIs and ScotJOS squad selections

Our club juniors have been busy representing Scotland at the JIRC and JHI, justifying their place in the ScotJOS squad for next year ...

Autumn is the season for 'international' orienteering events, with first the Junior Inter-Regional Championship (JIRC) in September, then the Junior Home International (JHI) in October.

This year the JIRC was hosted by the North East Orienteering Association, near Redcar on Teesside, on the weekend of 25-26th September. The 9 English regional squads, together with the Welsh, Northern Irish and Scottish squads, compete in an individual race on the Saturday followed by relays on the Sunday, with competitors in M/W14, M/W16 and M/W18 categories. ScotJOS have traditionally done very well in the JIRC and this year was no exception, with the team winning by a clear margin. 3 club Juniors travelled to the event - Laurence Ward (1st in individual M14), Pippa Carcas (2nd in individual W18), and Fiona Eades (11th in individual W18, 5th in relays).

For the JHI, hosted by SLOW (South London Orienteers), Angus Ivory joined Laurence, Pippa and Fiona. The JHI is often very closely fought, and this year was no exception. England held a small lead of 6 points over Scotland after the individual races on the Saturday, and while Scotland put up a good fight on the Sunday they could only equal England in the relays, so finished a close second.  Well done to Laurence (8th M14, 1st in relays), Angus (9th M18, team mate mispunched in relays), Pippa (5th W18, 8th in relays), and Fiona (8th W18, 5th in relays).

As a result of these and other performances, Angus, Fiona and Laurence have been selected for the ScotJOS squad for the coming year.  Congratulations to you all!
