Local Event Craigmillar Castle 10th April 2021
Results and report from our local event at Craigmillar Castle Country Park on Saturday 10th April 2021...
Another fantastic sunny day for an event, and a chance to see a few (socially distanced) familiar faces for the first time in quite a while. Just under 70 orienteers from local clubs turned up to enjoy Graeme Ackland's excellent courses (yellow, orange, green and blue) over a mixture of open and wooded terrain. Thanks to Jane Ackland for organising.

'Organising Interlopers’ first orienteering event after the second lockdown seemed insurmountable to me. Covid restrictions meant that a come-and try-it event became “club-only”, sign up and pay in advance, a limit of 70 runners, and no opportunity to encourage inquisitive park users to give it a go on the day. Luckily for Disorganiser Jane, there was calmness at the real helm, as the Ivorys sorted permissions, Google Poll entries, entry fees online, all the SI stuff, and then presented me with an excel file to mismanage.
On the day, of course, the sun shone, and the control hangers (Graeme, James and Scott) did an excellent job of hanging the controls complete with gripples in the tightest window that meant that, amazingly they were all still there for the competitors to find, and all in place for the lovely EUOC team to bring back afterwards.
I really hope we struck the right balance between covid safety and enjoying the chance to find real flags and catch up with friends after almost a year. I’m sure the bottle of hand gel at the start will have made all the difference. There seemed to be lots of happy people.
Many thanks to Katherine, William, Angus, Scott, James, EUOC and the planner, Graeme. I tried his blue course on Sunday, and it was lovely, and there was absolutely no evidence that an orienteering event had happened.
