Scottish Middle Distance Champs and Pentland SOL report

A busy weekend of racing with the contrast of Saturday's Scottish Middle Distance Champs on the relatively flat terrain of Beecraigs followed by the decidedly non-flat terrain of the Pentlands for Sunday's SOL...

Last weekend provided a pair of contrasting events, both within easy access of Edinburgh. Reports below.

Scottish Middle Distance Championships

FVO hosted this year's Scottish Middle Distance Championships on the Beecraigs West map, scene of the CSC Scottish Heat back in 2018. Assembly and Finish were just across the road from the playpark, with the starts about 1km to the south. Once you'd escaped the mud at the start, the courses headed out to the south and west on more open terrain before heading back north into the woods and the finish. Racing was fast and furious as you'd expect for a middle distance course, with even small mistakes costing places.

Some good results from club members, including 4 medal winners, as follows:

  • Women's Open: Louise Adams (5th)
  • Women's Veteran: Mary Ross (3rd), Heather Hartman (4th, only 8s behind), Katherine Ivory (14th)
  • Women's Supervet: Ann Haley (2nd), Lorna Eades (6th)
  • Men's Open: Peter Hodkinson (3rd), Aidan Smith (8th), Ben Stevens (9th)
  • Men's Veteran: Ben Hartman (7th), William Ivory (8th), preventing FVO from taking a clean sweep of the first 9 places!
  • Men's Supervet: Andy Kitchin (2nd), Rob Bloor (5th)

North Pentlands SOL

By contrast, ESOC's Sunday race was almost all in the open terrain of the North Pentlands. Courses started low (apparently the planner couldn't persuade anyone to carry the start clocks up the hill!) and zig-zagged upwards from there before (at least in my case on Brown) just heading straight up the hill and over the far side. I clocked up just shy of 500m ascent overall. The weather held, with almost no wind, and temperatures ideal.

Club members in the top half of their course:

  • Black (7 runners): Aidan Smith (2nd), Oleg Chepelin (3rd)
  • Brown (19): Andy Kitchin (7th)
  • Blue (36): Laurence Ward (10th), Rob Lee (16th)
  • Short Blue (28): Mary Ross (6th), Heather Hartman (11th), Graham McIntyre (13th)
  • Green (43): Ann Haley (14th)
  • Light Green (22): Lucy Ward (4th), Bethan Kitchin (7th)
  • Orange (25): Laura Kitchin (7th), Michael Doherty (8th)
  • Yellow (7): Heather Dudley (1)
